New vision for jazz in the city

Most clubs or societies need refreshing after 38 years. In the case of the Perth Jazz Society that means abandoning its long-held policy of Monday night gigs at a suburban hotel and striking out into new territory - different nights, different venues.

For nearly four decades the PJS has been a music institution - a place where jazz has been performed by local, national and international artists.

For most of that time its regular venue was the Hyde Park Hotel. Over the years some of the biggest names in international jazz have taken to the Hyde Park stage - from an early visit by violinist Stephane Grappelli in the 1970s to the Jacques Loussier Trio, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Art Pepper, Mike Stern, Mark Murphy, Blossom Dearie, Monty Alexander, Teddy Wilson and Iiro Rantala. Even Ronnie Scott, who lent his name to the most famous jazz club in London, played on a couple of occasions.

Four years ago the PJS moved to the Charles Hotel and continued the same programming format of music on a Monday night. It was a relatively successful transition, but audience numbers were slowly declining, club members were getting older and the regular format was beginning to look a little tired.

Jacques Loussier Plays Bach: The 50th Anniversary Recording CD ...

Playing the music of Bach in a jazz craze seems like heresy to some, like sheer silliness to others, and like gimmickry to many more.
